When stereo capabilities were added to existing designs of the radio-cassette recorder, the boombox became an inherent icon of popular culture. Boomboxes were introduced into the mainstream consciousness through music videos, television and documentaries and by the breakdancing and hip hop culture of the 80’s. They became “symbol of rebellion and a way to shout your message at the system”. These “gargantuan conglomerations of electronics, lights and chrome plated gadgetry” were embraced by the masses as an ultimate form of dissent – even while they marked the dawn of portable media players.
